Collection: Dorothy Ganek

Based in South Orange, New Jersey, Dorothy Ganek is an artist working in a contemporary abstract style. She uses recognizable objects and non-objective shapes, and gestural marks to tell her story. What drives her to create is as mysterious as it is fascinating — she just knows that she has to do it. Creativity for her takes on many forms; painting, silversmithing, book making and three dimensional objects.

Dorothy was born in Greece where she lived until the age of ten. Those early years provided her with endless memories of inspiration…recalling the bright Mediterranean light casting strong shadows on white houses and the intense turquoise blue of the Aegean Sea.  So it's not surprising that a touch of green blue seems to appear in most of her paintings.

As a child, she recalls playing in the garden of a small museum five minutes from her house in Sparta. Flashbacks of aged textures on marble relics and classic statues, strong fragrant roses in the formal garden and gigantic goldfish in the old stone fountains are etched in her mind. Her childhood experiences, combined with the impressions of her everyday environment today are what she draws from as an artist.
