Tats Otake serves as the creative director and jewelry designer for 8.6.4 Design based in Brooklyn, New York.
The brand’s style is bold, merging patterns with organic shapes and forms — as well as a melding of Japanese and American stylistic influences. It’s work that draws more attention to the person wearing it than the product itself, which is kind of magical.
Tats feels that whereas traditional jewelry has long been a way of communicating status, his pieces are more about pure style. He finds a great deal of inspiration in traditional Japanese design, which he summarized as, “Irregular, simple, realistic, and rustic.” He’s also an aficionado of Isamu Noguchi’s art and architecture — specifically the legendary designer’s use of line, shape, and color.
